THE ELDONIAN hall which was nearly destroyed in an arson attack has re-opened today after a major refurbishment.
The village hall, which opened in 1993, was a hub for the pensioners, families and retired seamen of the north Liverpool village.
But in November it was ravaged by fire and has been closed ever since.
Today, the Lord Mayor of Liverpool Cllr Sharon Sullivan and Mayor Joe Anderson attended an official ceremony to mark the club's restoration.
Eldonian Village Hall founder Tony McGann, who also attended and was made lifetime president of the Eldonian Group at the event, said: "Myself, the team and the whole community are delighted that the hall has re-opened in such a short space of time and has been done to such a fantastic standard. The village hall really is the people's club and it's been a tough time for everyone involved, especially those who depend on its facilities."
"The team fully understood our vision and needs of our residents and without them we wouldn't have got to this stage in the redevelopment. They truly have gone above and beyond their remit to get it looking unbelievable."
In light of the fire, new state-of-the-art security systems have been installed and adaptions have been made to drive down energy bills and be more environmentally friendly.
Paying tribute to Mr McGann, Eldonian Group chief executive Laurence Santangeli said: "Throughout this difficult journey Tony has demonstrated constant determination and positivity to make sure this essential facility was back in working order for the community as soon as possible."
CCTV footage of the November attack showed that the arsonists narrowly cheated death as they threw a petrol bomb at the club.
Had they been nearer to it they would have been engulfed in flames.
Thankfully no-one was in the building at the time of the attack but volunteers were due to open the club hours later. The culprits have not been found.
Mayor Anderson added: "I know how important this village hall was for people round here and it was a real blow when it was burnt down. It's great that everyone pulled together and were determined to restore it to beyond its former glory."
